Loud screeching noise from outside a/c unit?

Outdoor A/C unit has been working fine until 5:20 p.m. tonight, then a loud, screeching noise started. I noticed "water" (didn't appear to be freon) condensation on spout, near bottom of pan. Unit in attic appears fine, any suggestions as to what might be the problem?
