Why wont my laptop detect my mic?

i have an hp pavilion dv6-3210us laptop and i have an at2035 microphone but when i plug the mic in nothing happens, no mic is detected and the external mic in sound options shows no sound why doesnt it work? the mic is brand new and i checked fr a mute switch and there isnt one so im confused any help is appreciated
